Last night's game was not for the faint hearted. Liverpool took on Manchester City away and looked like a negative side going ahead. Chances were created too few for Liverpool's standard with Kuyt the notable guilty party as he scuffed the ball sky high after a fine work from Riera from the left. Shaun Wright Phillips was making a nuisance on the right and Aurelio was often caught in trouble. The later was not sharp at all and was always 2 steps behind the Man City maestro. Robinho had a couple of shots saved by Riena and showed why he should not be underestimated by any defenders just because he has a small stature. The first goal came after Aurelio made a silly mistake on the left and gave the ball away to Wright Phillips. Liverpool failed to clear the line as Arbeloa was unlucky to hit the ball right into Ireland's path as he wasted no chance to blast the ball past Riena. Liverpool tried to crawled back into the game but was only limited to long range efforts from Alonso and Skrtel. The second goal came when Riera gave a free kick away outside the penalty box as Garrido's free kick flew past Reina's left hand corner. Liverpool played with a packed midfield reverting to the old trusted system when Gerrard was played as a second striker just behind Torres. But the tactic obviously failed as City played some neat defending from midfield with Ireland playing a povital role shutting down Liverpool midfielders. Mascherano was having his day off as well as he was uneffective the whole throughout 1st half. |

Last night was the 2nd round of the Champions League where Liverpool played host to PSV at Anfield. People were expecting Liverpool to win the game as the dutch side have never won against the Reds in their so many Champions League encounters. History was made last night as well when captain marvel, Gerrard hit his 100th goal tally for the club and Keane broke his scoring duck. PSV looked to play a compact style of football and hit Liverpool on the counter attack but was soon trailing when Kuyt opened the scoring in only just 4 minutes of the game played. He continued his good form in Europe after scoring the winner against Liege in the qualification round. And last night was the same after PSV failed so clear the ball away from the penalty box. He fired a low shot straight to the PSV keeper who only managed to divert the ball into his own net. It was Kuyt again who played exceptionally well on the right linking up with Torres. Torres managed to run pass Salcido and delivered a perfectly weighted cross to Keane who broke his scoring duck. A trademark summersault and a machine gun was soon called after he scored. Something everybody thought was fitting for the irishman to do. PSV didnt have any shots on goal and Reina was particularly the more relaxed keeper between the two teams. |

Robbie Keane scored his first goal for Liverpool and Steven Gerrard joined the 100 club as the Reds marked Rafael Benitez's 250th match in charge with a comfortable 3-1 win over PSV Eindhoven. The Ireland international's first-half strike was upstaged by Stevie's century in what proved to be a routine victory against the Dutch outfit with Dirk Kuyt also on target. It means Liverpool remain level with Atletico Madrid at the top of Group D and will approach their double-header with the Spanish side in buoyant mood having taken maximum points from their opening two group fixtures for the first time ever. Ahead of the match Benitez had suggested he would keep with faith with the players who had served him so well in the opening 10 games of the season, and he was true to his word. Fabio Aurelio's return to action in place of Andrea Dossena was the only change from the team that beat Everton so convincingly at the weekend and it was a policy that would serve the Reds boss well. Indeed, he didn't have long to wait for his reward with Kuyt firing the Reds in front after just four minutes of the contest. |
